New Day Urban Ministries

The History of the Golf4Good Outing

A Group, a Game of Golf, and a Goal

In 2006, several San Diego Presbyterians began bouncing around ideas for raising funds to support the work of New Day Ministries, a California 501(c)(3) inner-city outreach of the Presbytery of San Diego. A golf tournament seemed to fit San Diego like a glove.

If you are interested in helping with this wonderful event, please contact Raul Palomino, Director at New Day Urban Ministries at director@newdayurbanministries.org.

The first tournament committee consisted of the following six event pioneers:
Bob ArthurFaith Presbyterian Church
Jim BeattyGraham Memorial Presbyterian Church
Herb ChristFaith Presbyterian Church
Bob CollinsFirst Presbyterian Church El Cajon
Wayne HoffmanGraham Memorial Presbyterian Church
Rick MooreGraham Memorial Presbyterian Church

2007. First Annual Tournament
Jim Beatty chaired the first annual tournament, which took place at Admiral Baker Golf Course, a private Navy-operated property in the Mission Gorge area of San Diego. The committee donated all the tournament net proceeds to the Presbytery of San Diego for exclusive use by Presbyterian Urban Ministries.

2008. Second Annual Tournament
Bob Arthur chaired the second annual tournament, which took place at Sea ‘n Air Golf Course, a private Navy-operated property in Coronado. That tournament saw a 50% increase of net proceeds over the previous year, and the committee saw substantial potential for equal or better growth in future years. All to benefit Presbyterian Urban Ministries.

2009. Third Annual Tournament
Under Rick Moore’s chairmanship, the 2009 tournament committee adopted the event name Golf4Good and extended committee membership to a few more people with compassion for urban ministries and experience in and talent for developing sponsors and promoting events. The Tournament was a sellout and the proceeds increased substantially!

2010. Fourth Annual Tournament
The Golf4Good tournament was at Sea ‘N Air and was very successful.  Bob Arthur and Lorna Holberg were Co-Event Administrators.  The G4G Committee had grown to 10 members and each person brought a special talent to the group.  The event is still expanding and changing in dynamics.  All proceeds benefit Presbyterian Urban Ministries.

2011. Fifth Annual Tournament
The G4G Tournament had a new venue this year at DoubleTree Golf Resort in Rancho Penasquitos. Under the leadership of Event Chairman, Jerry Edge, the G4G planning committee members were very involved in making the 2011 Tournament a success. A raffle, allowed at the course, and the silent auction increased attendees’ enjoyment, as well raising additional funds for Presbyterian Urban Ministries, the beneficiary of Golf4Good.

2012. Sixth Annual Tournament
This year, the G4G tournament returned to Sea ‘n Air. The greens were lovely and the 19th hole, where we held the post tournament dinner, sparkled from a major facelift. Bob Arthur, Event Chairman, and his enthusiastic committee worked together to produce a very successful tournament, raising funds needed by Presbyterian Urban Ministries to meet increasing service requirements.

2013. Seventh Annual Tournament
The G4G Tournament returned this year to Admiral Baker Golf Course, site of the first tournament. The North Course, where we played, had recently undergone a major renovation including eighteen newly constructed greens and thirty eight new green-side bunker complexes. Once again, Bob Arthur was Event Chairman. Bob and his Committee received a strong positive response from many Presbytery Churches to support PUM’s mission of ministering to our less fortunate brothers and sisters in urban San Diego.

2014. Eighth Annual Tournament
The G4G Tournament, based on 2013’s success, returned to Admiral Baker Golf Course. Chairman Stan Joosse, added some new members to the committee who worked with former members to gain support from all Presbytery Churches. As in previous years, all proceeds went to PUM to provide assistance to the poor and homeless of urban San Diego.

2015. Ninth Annual Tournament
Once again, G4G returns to Admiral Baker Golf Course. Lead by event Chairman Stan Joosse, the G4G committee is proud to provide an entertaining outing to participants. As before, all proceeds will be used to support PUM’s ministries.

2016. Tenth Annual Event
Once again, G4G returns to Admiral Baker Golf Course. Lead by event Chairman Cory Buckner, the G4G committee is proud to provide an entertaining outing to participants. As before, all proceeds will be used to support PUM’s ministries.
